Writing upside down: 1806-1859 ISAMBARD KINGDOM BRUNEL ENGINEER
The inscription on the edge of the Brunel Paddington Station £2 coin reads "1806-1859 ISAMBARD KINGDOM BRUNEL ENGINEER". The writing is upside down when the coin is heads side up.
This is NOT a minting error
The 2006 Isambard Kingdom Brunel Engineer coin has the inscription 1806-1859 ISAMBARD KINGDOM BRUNEL ENGINEER struck onto the edge of the £2 before the heads and tails faces are struck.
The blank with edge writing in place can fall either way up into the machine that strikes the coin design showing and the Queen's portrait simultaneously.
There is a 50/50 chance that the writing will be upside down. This is not rare and based on mintage figures, about 3,964,125 Brunel Engineer £2 coins have the letter text upside down when the heads side faces up.
