To clarify the confusion relating to the Atlantic Salmon 50p, there are currently 3 versions of the coin.
The reverse (tales side) of the coins are all exacly the same. The differences are only seen on the obverse (heads side).
The Atlantic Salmon 50p is a definitive coin which means it will be struck each year for coin sets available to buy from The Royal Mint and authorised third party suppliers such as The Westminster Collection and Koin Club. It may or may not be struck for circulation each year, depending on demand for new coins.
The coin shown below entered circulation in November 2023, it is a circulation only coin as the exact same reverse and obverse combination was not struck in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) quality.
The first coin available to purchase was the 2023 Atlantic Salmon 50p with crown privy mark on the obverse. Available from January 2023 as part of the year sets, it is a Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) only coin as the circulation version does not feature the crown privy mark on the obverse.
The 2024 Atlantic Salmon 50p is currently only available in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) quality as part of the 2024 coins sets. This version does not feature any privy mark on the obverse and at this time it is not known if any 2024 dated Atlantic Salmon 50ps will be struck for circulation.
*Mintage will be the sales figures for the Definitive and Annual Coin Sets added together (including sets sold in cards by The Westminster Collection and Koin Club) - as these are the sets that contain the Atlantic Salmon 50p. (2023 with crown privy mark on the obverse, 2024 no privy mark)
Note: No set or official packaging includes the 2023 no privy mark Salmon 50p struck for circulation.
Sales figures for coins are normally published two years later, so we could see 2023 figures published some time in 2025.
