With an original release date of the 31st July, the 2017 Brilliant Uncirculated Tom Kitten 50p was actually released for sale by The Royal Mint on the 7th of August. We checked prices and availability on the 17th August and found 6 sellers (excluding eBay and Amazon marketplace) with the coin available for delivery. Prices ranged from £7.88 to £12.
It is expected that by the end of 2017 The Royal Mint will have released a total of 9 Beatrix Potter 50p coins into general circulation. The 2016 set of 5 coins, Beatrix Potter Anniversary, Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Squirrel Nutkin, Mrs Tiggy-Winkle have been followed in 2017 by a new Peter Rabbit design, Mr. Jeremy Fisher, Tom Kitten and finally Benjamin Bunny.
When a new coin is issued, people will speculate about whether the coin will be rare or become valuable in years to come. In reality most coins made for circulation could be worth a few times face value to collectors, but this depends on the number of each coin design produced. As an extreme example, if the Tom Kitten 50p had only 200,000 coins minted for circulation (less than the Kew Gardens 50p) - it would likely be very collectible and reach similar prices on eBay.
Tom Kitten is a character that appeared in the 1907 book "The Tale of Tom Kitten". The tale is about 3 kittens (Mittens, Tom Kitten and Moppet) who are washed and dressed for a party by their mother Tabitha Twitchit, but they get into a mess whilst playing in the garden and are sent to their room.
