Royal Mint Product Description:

In 1916 Sovereigns were still being struck in Britain but these coins mostly became part of the gold reserve held by the Bank of England. Circulating editions had all but disappeared, sacrificed to fund a war effort that demanded ever more men and resources. As the war reached its midpoint, Allied Commanders sought a decisive breakthrough on the Western Front. But their ill-conceived -Big Push' would end in tragedy at the Battle of the Somme, as the men of the Pals Battalions were cut down by waves of heavy fire on that fateful first day.

This 1916 Sovereign is one of the last to be struck at The Royal Mint in London. Limited numbers were minted in 1917 and 1925, and production would continue at branch mints around the world, but only sporadically and in greatly reduced numbers. This year-dated coin features Benedetto Pistrucci's classic St George and the dragon design, while the portrait of George V by Bertram Mackennal adorns the obverse. This coin is presented in -Extremely Fine' condition.
