50 Years Celebration Sovereign 2-Coin Set
Brand: Royal Mint Limited
Product Code: HIS50SET
Royal Mint Product Description:Sovereigns struck in 1967 and 2017 presented together in a two-coin set
In 1967 the first North Sea gas was pumped to Britain's shores, the first Boeing 737 took to the skies and the groundbreaking Concorde was unveiled to the world. 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' provided the soundtrack for the 'summer of love' and a barefoot Sandie Shaw won the Eurovision Song Contest for the United Kingdom with 'Puppet on a String'. Colour came to United Kingdom television for the first time, as the first colour programmes were broadcast on BBC2 that year.
This two-coin set evokes memories of 1967, containing an original 1967 Sovereign along with The Sovereign 2017, struck to bullion standard. Both coins feature the famous St George and the dragon design on their reverse but The Sovereign 2017 features a shield mint mark in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the'modern' Sovereign. The obverse of each coin has a portrait of Her Majesty The Queen - the first coinage portrait of her reign by Mary Gillick on the 1967 coin and her most recent coinage portrait, by Jody Clark, on the 2017 coin brings the set right up-to-date.
