Struck in 1887, the year that Queen Victoria celebrated her Golden Jubilee, this historic gold Sovereign harks back to the height of the Victorian age, an era of peace and prosperity, and the -birth of modern times'.
Tribute was paid to Queen Victoria with a special Jubilee exhibition in Manchester, opened by Princess Alexandra on 3 May, with the official celebrations taking place in June. Visiting dignitaries gathered for a banquet at Buckingham Palace, before Queen Victoria toured London in an open carriage the following day, returning to watch the evening's fireworks from the Palace gardens.
To honour Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, a new portrait was commissioned for use on Britain's gold and silver coins. Known as the -jubilee head' it would be used until 1893 before being replaced by her final effigy. This 1887 Sovereign is presented in -Very Fine' condition - a beautiful example of this sought-after vintage coin.
