HMT Empire Windrush docked in Tilbury on 22 June 1948, bringing workers from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and other islands, to help fill post-war UK labour shortages.
The ship's name came to represent the many thousands of people who arrived in the UK between 1948 and 1971 from the Caribbean, setting up home, raising families, and leaving a permanent legacy for the history and culture of Britain: the Windrush Generation.
The reverse shows a depiction of a man and a woman set against a Union flag accompanied by the number 75 and the inscription "WINDRUSH GENERATIONS". The first portrait of His Majesty King Charles III by Martin Jennings appears on the obverse.
This 50p will enter circulation during 2023 as noted in the Windrush Cross-Government Working Group minutes of meetings 30 June 2021.
The Royal Mint strike circulating coins on behalf of HM Treasury, coin designs used and numbers minted are said to be based on demand from businesses - but in some cases, political pressures dictates production of circulating coins in the United Kingdom.
The Goverment, HM Treasury and The Royal Mint has now set a precedent - so it is difficult to see a situation where this coin will not enter circulation - likely in numbers around the 5 million mark.
The designer of the coin is Valda Jackson, who came from the Caribbean at the age of 5 to join her parents. Note: Minutes of a Windrush Cross-Government Working Group meeting suggested the 50p Windrush Coin would be designed by a Caribbean artist.
The design may have been influenced by the The National Windrush Monument created by Basil Watson.
The Windrush 75 network brings together organisations across the country who are committed to marking this significant moment in our shared history.

The dedication text that accompanies the Monument at Waterloo Station was designed by Abi Wright, British graphic designer of Caribbean heritage. For the title graphics, Abi has used a sans serif font designed by black British graphic designer Greg Bunbury called Empire Windrush, a typeface inspired by the iconic lettering on the HMT Empire Windrush passenger ship, paying tribute to the Windrush arrivals through a typeface that is as unique as the passengers who stepped off the boat 75 years ago.
