Selling a coin collection can be a daunting task – especially if the coins are inherited and you have no idea about values.

I am sure you will be looking for a dealer or auction house you can trust to give independent advice and an accurate valuation.

Here at Coin Hunter we are independent and always happy to offer advice and help you find the right dealers / coin auctions for the collection.

Follow these steps to get started - this will help you get the best price without taking too much of your time.

Step 1: Check the collection has a worthwhile value – some coins have very little value, so a collection of such coins would not justify the time and effort of travelling to an in person valuation or taking images of both sides of each coin.

To get a quick response broad range value, just email sellmycoins@coinhunter.co.uk with an image showing the whole collection.

If you have found an electronic document or spreadsheet listing the coins or even a paper list (take a photo) – attach this to the email.

Step 2: Coin Hunter will reply – if the value of your collection is less than £100, you would get the best return by selling direct via eBay / Facebook etc. – either as a whole collection to save time or as individual items to maximise returns.

If you like we can offer your collection via our Facebook coin group (over 13,000 members) at a fixed price or as an auction.

If the value is over £100, we will recommend coin dealers or auction houses that would be a good fit for the type(s) of coins in the collection.

In general, higher quality rarer coins would suit the auction route due to the competitive nature of bidding – whilst in many cases other coins would return a higher amount if sold to a coin dealer.

Buying / Selling coins at auction

The list below shows the main UK auction houses that have regular specialist coin auctions.

When bidding on auction lots - always check the fees including Buyers Premium (BP) so you know the exact cost of any lots you purchase.

When selling via an auction house, before consigning your coin collection - always check fees including Sellers Commission so you know how much of the hammer price you will recieve.

An auction fees example - note: there may also be other fees for valuation, insurance, transport, lotting, photography and marketing.

If a coin has a "retail" value of £1000 - and a buyer pays £1000 including Buyers Premium of 24% (20% + VAT)

The hammer price would be about £800

If the Seller Commission is 24% (20% + VAT) - the seller would receive £608 for the coin.

The auction house would receive £320 (+ £64 for HMRC as VAT)

Most coin dealers will offer between 60% and 90% of the retail value of a collection - with up to 95% on coins where most of the value is in precious metal content. (such as bullion gold coins)
